Department of Insurance and Financial Services Helps State’s Financial Businesses

New department ordered by Governor Snyder will better serve Michigan’s financial sector

LANSING, Mich., February 13, 2011–Next month, the Department of Insurance and Financial Services will open. This department is an extension of the Office of Financial and Insurance Regulations, an office that ensures financial sector companies are following state and federal law.  OFIR will leave the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to become the fully staffed Department of Insurance and Financial Services.

The Department of Insurance and Financial Services has been created after an executive order by Governor Snyder.  The governor mentioned this expansion of OFIR into a department during this year’s State of the State Address. This department will create better opportunities for insurance companies, credit unions, and similar businesses in the financial sector.
